When Adam Powell contacted us in 2012 to acquire speech MRI data for a music video, we thougth it would be a great idea to do something a bit different and highlight the work done by one of the charities that funded us (CLEFT). We never imagined the video would be such a success, hardly surprising considering James's talent, and generate that much interest from the general public and so many comments and questions. The following pages briefly explain the entire process behind the acquisition of the MR images and creating the final music video.
First, let's make it clear, your new favourite singer was NOT exposed to anything dangerous during the recording and will NOT suffer from anything because of the scan. MRI does not use ionising radiation and as long as you are OK to go in the scanner (most people with pacemakers are not able for exemple), it is perfectly safe and will not have any effect on your health. In the next video, you can see James being released from the scanner, a bit tired, but absolutely fine:
If you want to make your own video, you will have to follow these four easy steps:
However we don't recommend you attempt it unless you have the right equipment and a couple of physicists who know what they are doing to help you!
